Disney sues Redbox; DISH inks a new multiyear retrans deal

Top News

* Walt Disney Co. filed a lawsuit to stop Redbox Automated Retail LLC from selling digital copies of its movies, The Wall Street Journal reports. Recently, Redbox started offering codes viewers can use to download a digital copy of a Disney movie for between $7.99 and $14.99, which is less than it costs to buy them from other sites. Disney is seeking an injunction to stop Redbox from selling the digital codes and damages of up to $150,000 per copyright infringement.

* DISH Network Corp. struck a retransmission consent agreement with Lilly Broadcasting. The multiyear agreement allows DISH subscribers in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and three other markets in Pennsylvania, New York and Hawaii to access the broadcaster's channels, the company said.

* Recently discovered changes to Comcast Corp.'s corporate net neutrality page are raising questions about what U.S. internet users may experience after the Federal Communications Commission votes in December on overhauling its net neutrality regulations.

Technology

* As next-generation media and connected services increase demand for faster internet, some are wondering whether the broadband market could see a shift in the balance of power from incumbents such as AT&T Inc. and British Telecom to tech companies like Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. Industry observers gathering at The Great Telco Debate in London discussed this potential shift and more on Nov. 30.

* Apple Inc. is working to produce its own main power management chips for iPhones, Nikkei Asian Review reports, citing industry sources. The chips are expected to be used in iPhones as early as 2018.

* Alexa on Amazon's Fire TV now allows people to perform more advanced functions on supported apps from Bravo (US), CBS (US), Hulu LLC, NBC (US), Showtime (US), and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation Vue. With Alexa, viewers can use a series of commands to change the channel within an app, pause videos, fast forward, rewind and move to the next episode, according to an official blog post.

TV Networks

* Time Warner Inc.'s HBO (US) will air the "All Def Comedy" series without entrepreneur and producer Russell Simmons, Variety reports, citing an official statement. HBO removed Simmons from the series amid allegations of sexual misconduct. "We have no other projects with Russell Simmons," the premium network said.

Multichannel

* Comcast teamed up with London-based TransGaming to add more than a dozen casual games to its X1 set-top boxes, Multichannel News reports. New additions include "Tomb Runner," "Text Twist," "Solitaire," "Yeti Getaway," "Doodle Jump," "World Poker Tour," "Mahjong," "Tetris" and "Darts."

Internet & OTT

* Netflix Inc. renewed crime drama series "Mindhunter" for a second season, the company said. Set in the 1970s, the series explores the early days of criminal psychology and profiling.

* Twitter Inc.'s Twitter Lite app can now be downloaded in 24 more countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and Latin America. The new app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play store, offers a data saver mode to download only selected images or videos, the company said.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a lower opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng decreased 0.35% to 29,074.24, while the Nikkei 225 increased 0.41% to 22,819.03.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 was down 0.32% to 7,303.32, and the Euronext 100 was down 0.68% to 1,032.25.

On the macro front

The PMI manufacturing index, the ISM manufacturing index, the construction spending report and the Baker-Hughes Rig Count are due out today.
