Volkswagen AG will use two LNG-powered ships tocarry vehicles between Europe and North America in an effort to cut down onemissions.
VW Subsidiary Volkswagen Group Logistics said Oct. 5 that using LNGwill reduce each vessel's carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25% per year andnitrogen oxide emissions by up to 30%. Each Siem Car Carriers AS ship has thecapacity to carry 4,500 vehicles.
"The Volkswagen Group is shouldering its responsibility forthe environment," said Wolfram Thomas, head of production at Volkswagen. "Thisnot only applies to our cars but also to our production and logistics."
The U.S. EPA foundin September 2015 that the German automaker and its affiliates had skirtedfederal emission standards by installing a device that alerted the company whena vehicle was being tested for compliance with U.S. EPA standards. Finalapproval of a Clean Air Act partial settlement to compensate car owners is expectedin October.
