TSMC countersues GlobalFoundries over patent infringement

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. on Sept. 30 countersued its rival chipmaker GlobalFoundries Inc. in the U.S., Germany and Singapore for alleged patent infringement.

The Taiwan-based Apple Inc. supplier accused GlobalFoundries of infringing 25 of its patents covering various chipmaking technologies. TSMC wants an order for GlobalFoundries to stop making and selling chips that infringe on the patents.

TSMC said it is also seeking "substantial monetary damages" from GlobalFoundries for its "unlawful use" of the patented technologies and sale of infringing products.

GlobalFoundries earlier sued TSMC over claims that the latter's chip manufacturing technologies infringed 16 of its patents. TSMC called the allegations baseless.
