Report: EC considers plans to regulate facial recognition technology

The European Commission is considering plans to regulate the use of facial recognition technology as part of Europe's strategy to regulate artificial intelligence, London's Financial Times reported, citing EC's senior officials.

The commission intends to control "indiscriminate" use of facial recognition technology by companies and give European Union citizens rights over the use of facial recognition data, senior officials told FT.

Under the intended regulation, European citizens would know when their facial recognition data is being used.

The news comes after the U.K.'s Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham last week launched an investigation into the use of live facial recognition in the King's Cross area in London. The British watchdog will look into whether the use of the technology in the area complies with data protection laws.

The EC's planned directive, which is still in its early stage, intends to "foster public trust and acceptance" in the technology, an official added.
