Tech Time: South Korea allots trillions for IT; AWS unveils new tech services

TOP STORIES

* The South Korean government said Nov. 28 that it allocated 5.235 trillion South Korean won for its 2018 national IT project. The Ministry of Science and ICT will spend 1.752 trillion won on IT, including 104 billion won on the internet of things, 505.6 billion won on cloud computing, 212.3 billion won in big data and 136 billion won on artificial intelligence.

* Amazon.com Inc.'s Amazon Web Services Inc. on Nov. 27 unveiled five AWS Elemental Media Services, an integrated suite of services to create video offerings in the cloud. AWS also launched Amazon Sumerian, which allows developers to build virtual reality, augmented reality and 3-D applications.

CLOUD

* Microsoft Corp. said Nov. 28 that it is launching Azure Location Based Services, a feature that will be integrated into the Azure cloud computing platform for enterprise customers.

* Time Warner Inc.'s Turner Broadcasting System Inc. said Nov. 28 that it selected Amazon Web Services as its preferred cloud provider.

* Microsoft and Germany's SAP SE agreed to work together on cloud solutions for their respective customers, according to a Nov. 28 news release.

* Alphabet Inc. unit Google Inc. said Nov. 22 that it will open a Google Cloud Platform region in Hong Kong in 2018, its sixth GCP region in the Asia-Pacific.

* Baidu Inc. is poised to enter South Korea's cloud service market in early 2018 and is discussing potential cooperation options with multiple local independent software vendors, Digital Times reported Nov. 21.

5G AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

* Ooredoo unit Ooredoo Tunisie SA teamed up with French communications equipment company Sagemcom SAS to deploy an internet of things network in Tunisia that relies on LoRa technology, Sagemcom said Dec. 4.

* The Brazilian government assembled an interministerial committee tasked to integrate monitoring systems for the country's national internet of things plan, Telecompaper reported Nov. 30.

* Verizon Communications Inc. said Nov. 29 that it is planning to launch 5G wireless residential broadband services in three to five U.S. markets in 2018.

* Russian operators MegaFon and Rostelecom PJSC agreed to jointly develop 5G network to minimize rollout costs, MegaFon said Nov. 28.

* The Australian Communications and Media Authority on Nov. 28 launched its auction for 5G spectrum in the 1800 MHz, 2 GHz, 2.3 GHz and 3.4 GHz bands.

* Internet of things solutions provider Kerlink SA said Nov. 28 that it partnered with Lebanese ICT operator Libatel for the rollout of an internet of things network for smart agriculture.

* Nokia Corp. and StarHub Ltd. agreed to jointly develop internet of things-enabled applications and services within the scope of connected living, connected vehicles and connected buildings, Nokia said Nov. 27.

VIRTUAL REALITY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

* China's Baidu and Xiaomi Inc. agreed to jointly develop consumer devices with AI and internet of things technologies, the South China Morning Post reported Nov. 28.

* Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. acquired South Korean AI startup Fluenty, The Korea Herald reported Nov. 28.

* Jeff Dean, the head of Google's Brain Team, confirmed that Google is building an AI team in China, Tencent News reported Nov. 28.

* Facebook Inc. is rolling out its AI-based pattern recognition software to other countries to help prevent suicides, Reuters reported Nov. 27.

* Apple Inc. bought Vrvana, the company behind augmented reality headset Totem, TechCrunch.com reported Nov. 21, citing sources.

DRONES AND OTHER DEVICES

* Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. will release 5G-capable chips and 5G smartphones in 2019, Yicai Global reported Dec. 4.

* LG Uplus Corp. launched a smart cloud-based drone control system, Money Today reported Nov. 21.
