Fiat Chrysler recalls 1.6 million vehicles to replace Takata airbags

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling 1.6 million vehicles worldwide to replace defective Takata Corp. airbags as part of an ongoing series of recalls involving the faulty inflators, Associated Press reported Jan. 10.

The airbag inflators, which have a tendency to explode with too much force, have been linked to about 23 deaths and a number of injuries worldwide, according to the latest report.

The recall involves the 2010 through 2016 Jeep Wrangler SUV, the 2010 through 2014 Dodge Challenger muscle car, the 2010 through 2014 Dodge Charger sedan, and the 2010 through 2015 Chrysler 300 sedan.

The 2010 through 2011 Dodge Dakota pickup, the 2010 Ram 3500 pickup and 4500/5500 Chassis Cab trucks are also included in the recall.

Of the affected Fiat Chrysler vehicles, 1.4 million are from the U.S., the report said.

The automaker said it will notify affected owners by letter about the airbag replacement. It added that it is not aware of any injuries involved in the latest round of recall.

Earlier this month, Toyota Motor Corp. expanded its recall of vehicles fitted with Takata airbags to 1.3 million more cars while Ford Motor Co. recalled 953,000 more vehicles.
