Poland's Kino Polska seeks tie-up with Netflix

Polish channel operator Kino Polska TV SA is considering teaming up with U.S. streaming provider Netflix Inc. on producing new film content, Broadband TV News reported, citing Wirtualne Media.

Such a partnership would not extend to the SPI International Inc. affiliate's upcoming over-the-top service for the Polish market, which is expected to go live in 2020. Kino Polska TV reportedly plans to invest about 20 million Polish zlotys in the production of four to five movies, which will be shown on its channels, on video-on-demand services and in cinemas.

According to earlier reports, Kino Polska TV created a production arm that will focus on producing blockbuster films as well as TV productions that focus on Polish heritage and culture.

Netflix is working to expand its presence in eastern Europe through partnerships with operator-owned streaming services. In Poland, the company has existing deals with Kino Swiat, Alter Ego Pictures, AXN Polska and Next Film.

As of Jan. 7, US$1 was equivalent to 3.81 Polish zlotys.
