Marriott revamps loyalty program following data breach

Hotel operator Marriott International Inc. on Jan. 16 unveiled its new loyalty program Marriott Bonvoy, which will combine and replace its current customer programs Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest.

Marriott Bonvoy will launch Feb. 13, with loyalty points transferred to the rebranded program. It will be accessible through the Marriott app, which will replace the apps for SPG and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards.

The move comes in the aftermath of a data breach in the Starwood reservations system that compromised the information of up to 383 million guest records. The cyberattack was reportedly traced to Chinese hackers working on behalf of China's Ministry of State Security.

The company completed a phase-out of the reservations database used by its Starwood unit at the end of 2018, and all guest reservations are now going through Marriott's system.
