Cabot to pay Pa. penalty for gas emissions, late compliance reports

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. agreed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to pay a $99,000 civil penalty for air quality violations from natural gas wells in Susquehanna County, according to a Dec. 4 agency news release.

Cabot acknowledged the violations, including excess natural gas emission rates and failure to submit timely operations and compliance results, and has taken corrective measures.

The company had excess natural gas emissions from 267 pneumatic controllers at various well sites since 2013. The level exceeded the levels of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's national standards. Cabot has also failed to submit complete compliance demonstration reports for 20 gas wells, violating the Pennsylvania Air Pollution Control Act and federal new source performance standards, the state Department of Environmental Protection said.
