Verizon launching subscription cybersecurity service

Verizon Communications Inc. is launching a new subscription service aimed at helping businesses identify and prevent breaches.

The new offering, called the Threat Intelligence Platform Service, combines information Verizon has gleaned from 11 years of annual data breach investigations report as well as an analysis of traffic across Verizon's global IP backbone.

"Verizon operates one of the largest global IP networks, which gives us a wide view into a large portion of the world's data traffic," Bryan Sartin, Verizon's executive director of security professional services, said in a news release.

Verizon's Threat Intelligence Platform Service will be generally available to global customers in Fall 2018.

Verizon counted 53,308 security incidents and 2,216 data breaches across nine business sectors and multiple countries in 2017, up significantly from the previous year. The company's annual Data Breach Investigations Report defines a security incident as an event that compromises the integrity or confidentiality of a piece of information, while a breach is defined as an incident resulting in the confirmed disclosure of data to an unauthorized party. Verizon's previous report counted 42,068 incidents and 1,935 breaches in 2016.

Human error was at the heart of 17% of the breaches recorded in 2017. "That included employees failing to shred confidential information, sending an email to the wrong person or misconfiguring web servers," Verizon said. Moreover, while the vast majority of people will not click on a phishing campaign, 4% of the targets in any given phishing campaign will.

Breaking the security events down by sector and type, Verizon said the public sector saw the greatest number of incidents by far in 2017, counting 22,788. "It's not just state secrets being targeted," the company said. Rather, the personal data that government groups hold on citizens and employees is also at risk.

The information sector had the second largest number of incidents at 1,040. "Web application attacks, most often using stolen credentials, are a major issue," Verizon said. But the company noted that the biggest threat information companies face is from denial of service attacks, as they account for 56% of the incidents witnessed in 2017.

While the public and information sectors saw the highest number of incidents among the nine sectors covered, the healthcare sector saw the largest number of breaches in 2017, according to Verizon. Healthcare, which saw 536 breaches, is also the only industry where a majority of the breaches resulted from internal errors and exposures.
