BMW of North America LLC, the U.S. arm of German automaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, will recall a total of 41,981 cars and 5,938 motorcycles over component defects that could heighten the risk of a crash or fire, according to documents from the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
BMW will recall certain 2008-2012 BMW 128i, 135i, 135is Coupes and 128i, 135i Convertible vehicles due to concerns that the wiring and electrical connectors in the blower-regulator wiring harness of the cars may overheat, potentially causing the electrical connectors to melt. This could cause the vehicles to catch fire even when they are unattended, according to the document.
The company will start recalling the impacted vehicles Sept. 27. Dealers will inspect the cars' blower-regulator wiring harnesses and replace them with a new part, free of charge.
Separately, BMW will also recall certain 2019 C 400 X, 2018-2020 G 310 GS, and 2017-2020 G 310 R scooters and motorcycles whose front and rear brake caliper pistons may corrode, potentially causing the piston to stick or drag in the caliper bore.
According to the traffic safey administration, a sticking or dragging brake could affect braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW will start recalling the affected motorcycles and scooters Oct. 4 to have dealers replace the defective components, free of charge.
