Japan's household spending falls YOY in November 2018

Average spending per household in Japan dropped 0.6% in real terms to ¥281,041 in November 2018 from the same month a year ago, after discontinuity adjustments, data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications showed.

The data marked the third straight month of decline in household spending. On a nominal basis, average household spending was up 0.4% year over year in November 2018.

Spending on food declined by 2.2% in real terms and by 1.7% in nominal terms to ¥76,828 on an annual basis. Expenditure on fuel, light and water charges was down 10.0% in real terms, and 5.5% in nominal terms, while that on housing rose 18.6% in real and nominal terms.

As of Jan. 10, US$1 was equivalent to ¥108.30.
