Walmex sales jump 3.1% YOY in December 2019

Wal-Mart de México SAB de CV said Jan. 8 that consolidated sales for December 2019 climbed 3.1% year over year to 73.65 billion Mexican pesos from 71.43 billion pesos a year ago.

The Mexican arm of U.S. retail giant Walmart Inc. said total sales in Mexico rose 4.1% to 61.19 billion pesos during the month, compared with 58.79 billion pesos in December 2018. Comparable store sales grew 2.6% year over year in December 2019.

In Central America, sales fell 1.4% to 12.46 billion pesos from 12.64 billion pesos in the same period a year ago.

The retailer also opened 27 new locations in Mexico and one in Central America during the month.

On a year-to-date basis, Walmex's consolidated sales across its operating segments went up 4.8% to 641.82 billion pesos from 612.19 billion pesos during the January to December 2018 period. Comparable store sales for 2019 rose 4.4% year over year.

Sales in Mexico throughout 2019 increased 5.7% year over year to 527.51 billion pesos from 499.30 billion pesos, while sales in Central America grew 1.3% year over year to 114.30 billion pesos from 112.89 billion pesos.

As of December 2019, Walmex has 2,571 stores in Mexico and 836 stores in Central America.

As of Jan. 8, US$1 was equivalent to 18.81 Mexican pesos.
