Report: Toyota plans production halt at UK plant day after expected Brexit

Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to pause production at its Burnaston factory in the U.K. a day after the expected departure of Britain from the European Union on Oct. 31, The Guardian reported Aug. 29, citing a company spokesman.

The Japanese carmaker's staff at its plant in Derbyshire will not work Friday, Nov. 1, and will return the following Monday as Toyota, along with other car manufacturers, foresee a disorderly Brexit, the report said.

A company spokesman told The Guardian that if deliveries faced disruption following a disorderly Brexit, Toyota would still have enough parts for about two days of production.

Toyota did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's requests for comment.

The news comes almost a year after Toyota Motor Europe Chairman Didier Leroy told the Nikkei Asian Review in an interview that the company could suspend production in the U.K. for "a few days or weeks" under a no-deal Brexit. At the time, Johan van Zyl, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, said Toyota could also reconsider its future investments in the country.

In March, Van Zyl told reporters at the Geneva motor show that the company could leave the U.K. by 2023 in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The uncertainty surrounding Brexit has caused a streak of declines for the U.K. car manufacturing industry. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the U.K. car industry body, reported earlier that car production during May fell for the 12th straight month.
