VTB Bank Georgia loses 'several hundred thousand dollars' in hacker attack

Hackers stole several hundred thousand dollars from VTB Bank PJSC unit JSC VTB Bank (Georgia), Kommersant reported Dec. 21.

An initial investigation into the incident, which took place Dec. 14, showed that the hackers penetrated the Georgian bank's network via a phishing email that came from the lender's former partner, UNISTREAM COMMERCIAL BANK (JSC).

VTB Bank Georgia is the first identified victim of a hacking attack on Unistream, which took place in November. During the attack, phishing emails with malicious information were sent from Unistream's server to its partners in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Following the November attack, a number of Unistream's partners suspended or terminated cooperation with the bank, Kommersant said.
