Facebook Inc. will introduce its political advertising rules and other tools to curb election interference to India, Nigeria, Ukraine and the European Union before the elections in those places, Reuters reported.
The social network has used an ad hoc approach in implementing the rules, basing policies on local laws, the report said, citing Facebook global politics and outreach director Katie Harbath.
In Nigeria, effective January, and Ukraine, effective February, advertisers must be based in the country, Facebook said.
Meanwhile, in India, Facebook will put electoral ads in an online library as of February, Facebook product management director Rob Leathern said. The library will contain ad buyers' contact information or their official regulatory certificates.
Facebook is looking into policies for other countries, such as Australia, Indonesia, Israel and the Philippines, and hopes to have tools to be used by advertisers globally by the end of June.
