Nyrstar restarts old sinter lead plant at Port Pirie

Nyrstar NV temporarily resumed operations at the old sinter plant at its Port Pirie lead smelter in South Australia, Reuters reported Sept. 16, citing a company statement.

The company secured approval from South Australia's environmental protection authority to restart the old sinter plant to cover the shutdown period during ongoing repairs at the new plant.

The modern lead smelter furnace at Port Pirie has closed down twice in recent months due to unplanned blast furnace outages.

"This approval has been given by the EPA conditional on the basis of a range of controls which we are confident will ensure that the current low level of emissions are sustained," Nystar said.

The company noted that it does not have a restart date for the new plant. Port Pirie produced 160,000 tonnes of lead in 2018.
