Petrobras to start decommissioning offshore vessel after oil spill

Offshore floating platform operator MODEC Inc. is preparing for the decommissioning and removal of the Cidade Rio de Janeiro floating production storage and offloading ship after cracks resulted in an oil spill in Brazil's Campos Basin, according to an Aug. 29 news release from Petróleo Brasileiro SA.

Japan's MODEC informed the Brazilian multinational firm, also known as Petrobras, that a salvage team boarded the vessel for the preparation activities on Aug. 29. The team is working to safely reduce the products stored on the ship, which has been out of operation since 2018.

The platform contains approximately 450 cubic meters of diesel oil and 169 cubic meters of oily sludge, both stored in tanks unaffected by the damage. The ship has a total storage capacity of about 250,000 cubic meters.

Petrobras said the oil spill has been reduced and vessels are continuing to clean and disperse it. According to the company, around 1.2 cubic meters of residual oil was initially collected, but an additional leak of 6.6 cubic meters was found.

The company also evacuated employees in the ship from Aug. 24 to Aug. 26.
