Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 191,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Japan over issues with previously fixed airbags that may not correctly inflate during a crash.
The recall involves certain 2003-2008 model year Corolla compact cars and 2005-2008 model years Matrix compact hatchbacks.
Toyota said in a release dated Aug. 28 that the recall involves approximately 135,000 vehicles in the U.S. Including those in Japan, the number of cars being called back would reach 191,000 units, according to a report in The Associated Press.
The front passenger airbag in the cars being recalled might be damaged and might not inflate properly, which may result in occupant injury in a crash. These airbags were replaced as part of prior Takata Corp. recalls.
The Japanese automaker will replace the front passenger airbag assembly, free of charge. Toyota will notify owners of affected vehicles via mail by the end of October.
