Texas oil, gas permits in February up nearly 11% from year-ago levels

The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 1,097 original drilling permits in February, down from the 1,166 permits released in January but well in excess of the 991 permits issued in February 2017.

For the month, 975 permits were to drill new oil or gas wells, 107 were for wellbore recompletion and 15 were to re-enter plugged wellbores. The permits included 284 for oil-only drilling, 87 for gas-only drilling, and 647 for oil or gas drilling.

The commission said it processed 672 oil, 149 gas and 56 injection well completions in February. During February 2017, the commission reported 533 oil, 95 gas and 49 injection well completions.

Year-to-date well completions stand at 1,845, up 52.10% from the 1,213 well completions recorded in the same period in 2017.

Midland had the most oil well completions, with 401, and had 49 gas well completions. The San Antonio area recorded 40 oil completions and no gas completion for the month.
