Nissan names China head Uchida as CEO

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. on Oct. 8 appointed Makoto Uchida as its next CEO.

Uchida, a senior vice president who joined Nissan in 2003 and leads its China operations, will replace Hiroto Saikawa, who announced his resignation Sept. 9 after admitting to being overpaid and overseeing a period of weak performance in the wake of the Carlos Ghosn scandal.

The Japanese automaker also named Ashwani Gupta, current Mitsubishi Motors Corp. COO and a former Renault SA executive, as COO of the company. Jun Seki, senior vice president and leader of Nissan's turnaround efforts, has been named vice COO. Both were reportedly considered for the CEO role.

Nissan did not disclose the future of current COO Yasuhiro Yamauchi, who has been acting as interim CEO since Saikawa's resignation.

Earlier Oct. 8, Reuters reported that Nissan's board was expected to meet that day as the head of the nominations committee and an "influential executive" were at odds over who should lead the company.

"We expect Uchida to lead the company as one team, immediately focus on the recovery of the business and revitalize the company. We look forward to Gupta and Seki fully leveraging their expertise and experience to support the new CEO," Nissan Chairman Yasushi Kimura said.

Nissan said it intends for the appointments to be effective no later than Jan. 1, 2020.
