Hampton Roads coal exports surge in November

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia spiked 72.4% year over year to 3.4 million tons in November and climbed 9.4% from October's total, according to data obtained Dec. 5 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports stood at 1.3 million tons in November, up 74.3% from 720,441 tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, climbed 13% year over year to 748,250 tons, compared to 661,908 tons in November 2016.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports surge 138.6% year over year to 1.4 million tons, compared to 574,120 tons in the same period a year ago.
