Friday's Bank Stocks: Carver Bancorp, OptimumBank Holdings dip

Shares of New York-based Carver Bancorp Inc. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based OptimumBank Holdings Inc. fell in trading on high volume May 18, as broader stocks ended the day slightly negative.

Carver Bancorp dropped 24.36% to $8.32, continuing a volatile few days of trading. Carver stock closed at $3.70 on May 16 and then leaped to $11.00 at the closing bell May 17. In a press release after market close May 17, the company denied that any news was to blame for the market activity, adding that no insiders have sold or acquired any Carver shares recently.

"The company confirms that it has not taken any corporate action that would explain the trading activity and is not in possession of any material, non-public information that would prompt the trading activity," the statement said.

OptimumBank Holdings fell 12.32% to $5.48, similarly experiencing a few days of ups and downs. Shares of OptimumBank closed at $4.76 on May 16 and then jumped to $6.25 at the closing bell May 17. The company has not publicly addressed the stock movements.

Equities broadly ticked down in trading May 18. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day unchanged at 24,715.09, the S&P 500 declined 0.26% to 2,712.97 and the Nasdaq Composite Index decreased 0.38% to 7,354.34.

Bank stocks saw slightly harder decreases.

At the large banks, JPMorgan Chase & Co. decreased 1.62% to $111.13, Bank of America Corp. fell 1.79% to $30.26, Citigroup Inc. lost 2.24% to $69.96 and Wells Fargo & Co. declined 0.96% to $53.70.

New York Community Bancorp Inc. ticked down 0.33% to $12.03.

Not all banks traded down. Troy, Mich.-based Flagstar Bancorp Inc. added 1.46% to $34.68 and Johnstown, Pa.-based AmeriServ Financial Inc. gained 1.79% to $4.28.
