Global edition: Disney orders 'Star Wars' series; Apple preps 1st animated show

The Program Guide's global edition highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms around the world.

On TV

* "The Voice Senior," a spinoff of the hit singing competition "The Voice" is getting a local version with MEDIALAAN nv in the Flemish region of Belgium. "The Voice Senior" sees contestants aged 60 and above competing in the show, World Screen reported March 12.

* ITV Plc said March 12 that it renewed its detective drama "Endeavour" for a sixth season. Shaun Evans will return to reprise the role of DS Endeavour Morse. The series will be filmed later this year and will air in 2019.

* "The Four," a 12-part Romanian adaptation of Armoza Formats' singing competition "The Final Four," is set to air on Antena 1 this month, C21Media reported March 12.

* A+E Networks in Poland commissioned a second installation of its true-crime series "Killer Women," C21Media reported March 7. The six-part show, which features real-life stories of jailed Polish women, will air on Crime + Investigation Polsat on March 28.

* British comedy "Plebs" is being developed for the U.S., Variety reported March 6. Rise Films, the producer of the U.K. version, will be working with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Point Grey Pictures on the U.S. treatment. The comedy, set in Ancient Rome, follows the everyday life of a group of young men.

* Walt Disney Co. ordered a live-action series based on the "Star Wars" film franchise to be written and executive produced by Jon Favreau. The show will be created for Disney's forthcoming direct-to-consumer streaming platform, with the title and release date yet to be confirmed. The news was announced March 8 by Lucasfilm, which will produce the series.

* Apple Inc. commissioned 20th Century Fox to produce "Central Park," its first animated series. According to Variety, the "musical comedy" tells the story of how a family of caretakers who live in Central Park in New York City end up saving the park and the world. Apple ordered 26 episodes of the show in total, split into two 13-episode seasons.

* Naudet brothers Jules and Gédéon, the directors of "9/11," are launching their new project, "November 13," around mid-2018. The three-part documentary series, which will be available exclusively to Netflix members around the world, explores the human stories behind the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, according to a March 9 news release.

* Netflix Inc. will premiere its first South Korean original stand-up comedy special "Yoo Byungjae: Too Much Information" on March 16, the company said March 7. The series will be available for streaming on Netflix internationally.

* Netflix will stream "1983," its first Polish original series, globally later this year. This eight-episode series, which is currently in production, features Robert Wieckiewicz and Maciej Musial as a disgraced police investigator and an idealistic law student who stumble upon a conspiracy that changed the course of the nation and kept the Iron Curtain standing, the company said March 7.

* Amazon.com Inc. said March 6 that Amazon Studios has given a direct-to-series order for "Undone," the streaming service's first half-hour animated show. Co-created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy of "BoJack Horseman," "Undone" will premiere globally in 2019 exclusively on Amazon Prime. Currently in pre-production, the dramedy explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma.
