GE Hitachi, Synthos to explore potential small modular reactor project in Poland

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, or GEH, is collaborating with synthetic rubber manufacturer Synthos SA on the potential construction of a small modular nuclear reactor in Poland.

GEH said it believes the water-cooled, natural circulation, 300-MW small modular reactor can be cost competitive with gas, renewables and other forms of power generation, according to an Oct. 21 news release. The companies agreed to investigate the potential to build the project in a memorandum of understanding.

"Small modular reactors can play a significant role in addressing Poland's energy challenges, the modernization of the nation's energy sector and in achieving necessary and responsible deep decarbonization," Synthos owner Michal Solowow said.

GEH is a global nuclear alliance between General Electric Co. and Hitachi Ltd.
