Vestager nominated to retain European competition chief role

European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen proposed to retain Denmark's Margrethe Vestager as the competition commissioner as she presented her new 27-member executive team Sept. 10.

Von der Leyen also nominated Vestager to helm the EU's digital policies in addition to her current role.

In her first term, Vestager imposed record fines on U.S tech companies, including Alphabet and Apple, which was forced to pay a record €13 billion of unpaid taxes plus interest to Ireland.

Current agriculture commissioner Phil Hogan is nominated to take the trade portfolio, while Paolo Gentiloni is proposed as the new economics chief.

President-elect von der Leyen nominated former European Parliament member Sylvie Goulard as the internal market commissioner, who would be responsible for executing industrial policy and promoting the digital single market.

Valdis Dombrovskis is proposed as the commissioner for financial services while Johannes Hahn will oversee budget and administration if appointed in the respective role.

The nominations will be forwarded to the European Parliament for approval. Members of the commission will be appointed in October and retain their roles until Oct. 31, 2024.

Von der Leyen, who was appointed as president of the EC in July by a narrow margin, will take office Nov. 1 for a five-year term.
