River Trading sells spot barge coal to East Kentucky Power

East Kentucky Power Cooperative Inc. is buying 93,000 tons of coal for its 1,346-MW H.L. Spurlock power plant in Mason County, Ky., from River Trading Co. Inc. through June 30, according to a new regulatory filing.

The Winchester-based co-op told the Kentucky Public Service Commission it signed a sales contract with Cincinnati-based River Trading late last year.

Under the agreement, which started in January, River Trading is sending approximately 15,000 tons per month of barge coal to the co-op's largest power plant and paying $1.80/MMBtu for the coal.

Specifications for the coal include a minimum of 11,500 Btu/lb, maximum of 6 lbs SO2/MMBtu, a maximum of 13% ash and a maximum of 10% moisture.

River Trading is loading all barge shipments barges at Docks Creek Terminal at mile post 6.4 on the Big Sandy River.

East Kentucky said it will deduct 20 cents per ton for each 0.1% sulfur content that exceeds the purchase specification.

The coal is coming from an unidentified mine in Wayne County, W.Va.

The new contract filing comes on the heels of East Kentucky's recent disclosure that it purchased more than 30,000 tons of spot coal in December for Spurlock units 1 and 2. East Kentucky said it paid $38.84 per ton for 6,383 tons for f.o.b. mine coal from Red Hill Energy Ltd. and $55.41 per ton f.o.b. mine for 10,130 tons from Alliance Resource Partners LP.

The co-op also bought 11,096 tons from River Trading in December for $39.88 per ton f.o.b. mine and another 4,973 tons from Alliance for $38.84 per ton.
