Va. coal exports decline 27.6% YOY in July

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia dropped 27.6% year over year to 2.5 million tons in July, according to data from the Virginia Maritime Association on Aug. 15.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports decreased 10.6% year over year to 1.2 million tons.

Exports from Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, declined 38.7% year over year to 471,312 tons of coal, compared to 768,921 tons in July 2018.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports down 39.1% year over year to 787,720 tons.
