Vedanta to shutter Skorpion zinc operation in Namibia for 4 months

Vedanta Ltd. plans to shut down its Skorpion zinc operation in Namibia from early November until the end of February 2020 due to technical problems that resulted in reduced ore production, Reuters reported Oct. 11.

The Skorpion refinery was previously halted for five weeks in March after a strike depleted stocks. The mine produced 65,948 tonnes in the company's fiscal 2019, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

According to the website of Vedanta Zinc International, which holds the property, an ongoing US$200 million pit expansion has boosted reserves and resources to 26 million tonnes and extended the mine life to 2020 from 2017.

The expansion is key to a US$160 million project aimed at enabling the refinery to process zinc concentrate from the Vedanta unit's flagship Gamsberg mine in South Africa.
