A U.S. District Court jury in Marshall, Texas, awarded United Services Automobile Association $102.8 million after finding that Wells Fargo & Co. willfully infringed on certain of USAA's patents.
The lawsuit alleged that Wells Fargo Mobile Deposit — which allows its customers to deposit checks using smartphones — infringed USAA patents. Wells Fargo Mobile Deposit includes features that were "invented, developed, and released to customers years earlier by USAA," according to the lawsuit.
"Wells Fargo strongly disagrees with this jury verdict and does not believe it has infringed on USAA's patent rights," the company said in an emailed statement. "We believe this is an industry issue involving numerous other banks that license remote mobile deposit technology from the same vendor, not USAA."
The spokesperson said the company is considering options based on the verdict and trial.
A jury recently awarded USAA $200 million in another patent-infringement lawsuit against Wells Fargo in late 2019.
