Amazon, Mexico's Televisa ink Spanish-language content deal

Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Video is venturing into Latin American original content production through a multiseries agreement with Mexican broadcaster Grupo Televisa SAB and its new premium content unit Televisa Alternative Originals, Variety reported Feb. 22.

Under the deal, the U.S. streaming giant will license several eight- to 10-episode Spanish-language series from the unit.

Televisa Alternative Originals will focus on creating and distributing content with multicultural characters and storytelling, the report said.

Grupo Televisa and Univision Communications Inc.'s Univision (US) will get second-window rights on broadcast and pay TV in Mexico and the U.S., respectively.

Amazon Prime Video will have global subscription video-on-demand rights to the series, Variety said.

"With the different window opportunities that we have and considering that the IP is very important to us, you can expect Televisa to partner with international players to produce premium content," Grupo Televisa Chief Content Officer Isaac Lee said in a Feb. 21 fourth-quarter 2017 earnings conference call, hinting at the deal.

Televisa Alternative Originals will establish offices in Mexico and Los Angeles.

Its creative and business heads, who will soon be announced, will report to Boris Gartner, Grupo Televisa's head of strategy and operations for its content business. the report said.
