Amazon.com Inc. is in discussions with smart license plate maker Phrame about a concept to deliver packages to the trunks of customers' cars, CNBC reported Oct. 10, citing a person with knowledge of the matter.
The product consists of a secure box to hold the car keys and that fits around the license plate, according to the report. Delivery drivers would be allowed access to the key box via a customer's smartphone.
The talks between Amazon and Phrame have reportedly reached an advanced stage. The effort is one of several by the e-commerce giant to better protect packages, which can be stolen or damaged when left unattended in front of homes.
