Located in Arlington, Va., Cast.era will focus on cloud infrastructure for broadcasting, ultra-low latency over-the-top broadcasting, and targeted advertising, according to a Jan. 13 news release.
The two companies plan to combine SK Telecom's telecommunication technologies and Sinclair's broadcasting infrastructure to launch next-generation transmission services in the U.S. beginning in 2020.
Kevin Gage, former executive vice president, strategic development and chief technology officer of Sinclair's ONE Media unit has been named Cast.era's lead representative and COO, while Park Kyung-mo from SK Telecom has been named Cast.era's chief technology officer.
The companies also agreed to work to expand high-quality broadcasting services based on 5G and ATSC 3.0, as well as to establish a 5G-ATSC 3.0 testbed in Jeju Technopark in Korea. 5G-ATSC 3.0 services will also be applied to Sinclair's television station located in Washington, D.C.
