Report: Trump weighs tariffs on $60B worth of Chinese imports

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is considering new tariffs on $60 billion worth of imported goods from China, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed source who had discussed the matter with the White House.

The report said the tariffs would target, but would not be limited to, the technology and telecommunications sectors.

Politico also reported that last week, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer presented Trump a package of tariffs aimed at $30 billion a year in Chinese imports.

However, Trump urged Lighthizer to consider a higher figure and instructed administration officials to prepare for an official announcement in the coming weeks, according to the report, which cited people involved in the trade discussions.

Tariffs were being considered on more than 100 Chinese products, including electronics, telecommunications equipment, furniture and toys, the report added.

Trump reportedly told Cabinet secretaries and top advisers that he wanted to impose tariffs and investment restrictions on China soon over its alleged intellectual property theft, which the U.S. started to investigate in August 2017.

Trump said on Twitter last week that China has been asked to develop a plan for 2018 to reduce its trade imbalance with the U.S. Beijing has a $375 billion trade surplus with Washington, according to Reuters.

In December, Trump's first national security strategy report labeled China and Russia as global threats to U.S. prosperity and power.

Trump's possible new trade action against China would follow the recently signed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
