BPA, Alcoa amend PPA to improve competitiveness of Wash. smelter

The BonnevillePower Administration agreed to amend its power purchase agreementwith Alcoa Inc., amove that will benefit Alcoa's Intalco Works aluminum smelter in Ferndale, Wash.

Alcoa has a 10-yearcontract with BPA that will expire September 2022. The amendment tothe PPA provides additional access to market power during the July 1, 2016, toFeb. 14, 2018, period, according to a May 2 release.

The revised PPA will prevent curtailment of operations atthe smelter, which has a capacity of 279,000 metric tons per year, at the endof the second quarter.
