Report: Amazon set to begin trial run of Australian retail ops

Amazon.com Inc. plans to begin a trial run of retail operations in Australia on Nov. 23, a local merchant confirmed to Reuters in a Nov. 22 report.

An email was reportedly sent from the e-commerce giant to merchants signed up on Amazon Marketplace, telling them that they should prepare to receive orders starting at 2 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time on Nov. 23.

Adam Mills, founder of children's internet monitor provider KoalaSafe Inc., is among the Australian retailers signed up to sell on the platform and told Reuters that he had received the email.

He also confirmed that the message he received was the same as one first seen on Lifehacker Australia, which on Nov. 22 published a screenshot of an email stating that the online retailer would "prepare for the launch of the Amazon Marketplace in Australia" by starting "an internal testing phase with a small number of customers" on Nov. 23.

The company has been preparing to roll out Amazon Marketplace in Australia since earlier this year. While an exact date has yet to be officially announced, an Australia-based Amazon executive recently told prospective merchants that a launch was "really close."

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
