Verizon teaming up with Corning, SAP on 5G, IoT analytics

Verizon Communications Inc. teamed up with telecom-equipment maker Corning Inc. and German software giant SAP SE to develop services based on 5G and internet of things-enabled data analytics, respectively.

Corning will use Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband service to test 5G use cases for factory automation and quality assurance at its fiber-optic cable manufacturing facility in Hickory, N.C. The companies are also working on 5G solutions to possibly improve production processes for goods and services.

Verizon's partnership with SAP will see the two companies developing IoT-based data processing applications for businesses. The services will be made using Verizon's network and platforms, combined with SAP's IoT, edge services and analytics, computing and data management software.

The deals extend Verizon's existing partnerships with Corning and SAP. The U.S. carrier is using SAP's cloud and finance platforms, while SAP tapped Verizon to build its global infrastructure network. Verizon and Corning, meanwhile, have been recently developing technologies for 5G deployment.
