American Campus Communities Inc. broke ground on the first phase of the North District redevelopment project at the University of California Riverside as part of the student-housing real estate investment trust's ongoing public-private partnership with the university.
The mixed-use student-housing community, which will offer up to 6,000 beds, will be on a 50-acre site on the northern part of the campus.

The REIT said it expects the first phase to deliver 1,500 apartment-style beds by 2021, while the future phases will include residence hall housing, new dining facilities, mixed-use residential and athletic facilities, and more than 100,000 square feet of amenities.
A LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council is being sought for the project. The Leadership in Energy and Environment Design system is one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide.
The REIT is also working with the university on the development of Dundee Hall and Glasgow Dining Hall, which are expected to open in the fall of 2020.
