Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG were ordered by a Philadelphia court to pay $27.8 million to an Indiana couple over their failure to warn of internal bleeding risks associated with the blood thinner Xarelto, Reuters reported Dec. 5.
The Philadelphia state court jury charged the two pharmaceutical companies, which jointly developed the blockbuster drug, $1.8 million in compensatory and $26 million in punitive damages, Reuters reported quoting the couple's lawyer.
The two companies won three previous cases in federal court.
Xarelto was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2011.
