GM to start production of self-driving Cruise AV model

Michigan-based automaker General Motors Co. said March 15 that it will start assembling production versions of its driver-free Cruise AV model with plans to commercialize it in 2019.

The Cruise AV will be a self-driving model that operates without a steering wheel, pedals or manual controls.

The vehicle will be built at GM's assembly plant in Orion Township, Mich., while the roof modules comprising cameras, sensors and other parts that enable self-driving capabilities will be put together in the company's Brownstown, Mich., facility. GM said it will invest more than $100 million in improvements at both factories.

The company expects to start production on the fourth generation of the Cruise AV in 2019, while production of the roof modules is already underway.
