Romania's central bank hikes key rate on rising inflation

Banca Nationala a României raised its monetary policy rate to 2.25% from 2.00%, citing rising inflation.

The bank also raised its deposit facility rate to 1.25% from 1.00% and the lending facility rate to 2.25% from 3.00%.

Inflation rate climbed to 3.3% in December 2017 from 3.2% a month earlier, while annual core inflation rate reached 2.5% from 2.3% in November 2017, the bank noted.

"The NBR Board decisions aim to ensure and preserve price stability over the medium term in a manner conducive to achieving sustainable economic growth," the bank said.

The central bank last month increased its key rate for the first time in almost 10 years, from a record low.
