Report: Ascension, Providence in deal talks to form largest US hospital operator

Ascension Health and Providence St. Joseph Health have been in talks for months over a potential merger that would create the largest U.S. hospital operator, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions.

A combination of the two nonprofit operators would create an entity with 191 hospitals in 27 states and estimated annual revenue of $44.8 billion — surpassing HCA Healthcare Inc., the largest U.S. hospital operator with 177 hospitals and a 2016 revenue of $41.5 billion.

The discussions have included schemes other than a merger, one of the sources told the Journal. There is no assurance that the talks will result in a merger. Financial terms of a potential deal were not clear, the paper added.

Ascension operates across 22 states and the District of Columbia, including Texas and Washington, where Providence also has operations, the report noted. Providence also has hospitals in Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico and Oregon.
