China issues 1st list of rare diseases to better manage patient care

China released its first official list of rare diseases, according to a China Food and Drug Administration unit.

The document, which was jointly issued by five government departments, lists 121 rare conditions, said the Medical Economic Information Network, or Menet, on its official WeChat account.

Genetic disorders make up most of the diseases listed, including nervous system disorder Angelman syndrome, kidney condition Gitelman syndrome, bleeding disorder hemophilia and brain cell death disorder Huntington's disease.

Other conditions included are amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease; multiple sclerosis; early-onset Parkinson's disease; phenylketouria; and sickle cell anemia.

With the listing, China aims to strengthen drug and medical device innovation and better manage patient care for those suffering from the conditions, the document said. It was released by the National Health Committee, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China Food and Drug Administration, and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
