Apple to build 2nd China data center, Qualcomm launches 5G initiative in China

TOP STORIES

* Apple Inc. will set up another data center in China, this time in Ulanqab in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Xinhua News Agency reported Feb. 6, citing a local government announcement.

* Qualcomm Inc. unit Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and companies Lenovo Group Ltd., Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp. Ltd., vivo Communication Technology Co. Ltd., Xiaomi Inc.'s Xiaomi Communications Co. Ltd., ZTE Corp. and Wingtech Technology Co. Ltd. are working together in a "5G Pioneer" initiative to accelerate the availability of commercial 5G premium tier devices expected in 2019, according to a Jan. 25 announcement. Qualcomm Technologies also entered into a multiyear agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. to partner in various technologies and across a range of mobile devices, as announced Feb. 1.

CLOUD

* Internet Initiative Japan Inc. on Feb. 6 announced plans to build a second data center in Japan's Chiba prefecture in April 2019.

* Samsung Group's IT service unit, Samsung SDS Co. Ltd., said Feb. 5 that it will open a new data center in the South Korean city of Chuncheon to strengthen its cloud business.

* Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s cloud computing arm on Jan. 29 partnered with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corp. and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, the city council of the Malaysian capital, to launch cloud technology and AI initiatives.

5G AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

* KT Corp. successfully completed the demonstration of data roaming between its pilot 5G network and NTT Docomo's commercial 4G LTE network, the Korean Economic Daily reported Feb. 6.

* SK Telecom Co. Ltd. said Feb. 5 that it completed the "cooperative driving" of two autonomous vehicles connected through 5G vehicle-to-everything technology to exchange traffic information.

* Qualcomm Inc. plans to develop its internet of things business in Indonesia this year by partnering with local tech companies, Pikiran Rakyat reported Feb. 5.

* Singtel Optus Pty. Ltd will start rolling out a 5G fixed network in early 2019, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Feb. 2.

* NTT Data Corp., the IT services arm of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., announced on Jan. 24 a partnership with U.S.-based Skuchain Inc. to establish an integrated blockchain internet of things platform.

* SK Telecom is taking part in an open-source networking project by Linux Foundation to work with Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Inc., China Mobile Ltd. and others on developing 5G services and infrastructure, ET News reported Jan. 24.

VIRTUAL REALITY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

* China's National Development and Reform Commission and Samsung Electronics signed an agreement for further cooperation in chip making, AI and semiconductor manufacturing, China Daily reported Feb. 6.

* Naver Corp. on Feb. 5 merged its search portal R&D unit Naver Search and AI platform R&D unit Clova to utilize AI technologies for the further advancement of its search technologies.

* India's Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Feb. 1 allocated the National Institution for Transforming India will create a national program focusing on AI.

* SoftBank Group Corp. unit SoftBank Corp. on Jan. 29 announced a tie-up with Japanese AI developer Cogent Labs Inc. in the the area of robotic process automation for processing handwritten documents.

* Taiwanese digital devices maker Inventec Corp. will form an AI center for 5G technologies, medical electronics and the general AI industry, UDN reported Jan. 28.

* Didi Chuxing Technology Co. Ltd. on Jan. 26 said it established AI Labs, a new AI lab to support its development of AI transportation technology.

* SK Broadband launched Btv x NUGU, a new TV set-top box equipped with SK Telecom's AI service NUGU, ET News reported Jan. 25.
