Italy's Prime Minister-designate Carlo Cottarelli hinted at a possible compromise, which could lead to the formation of a government constituting politicians, rather than technocrats like himself, Reuters reported.
Cottarelli said new possibilities had emerged "for the birth of a political government" and that he was waiting for further developments to materialize, as the ongoing political turmoil in Italy has kept investors on edge.
Five Star Movement and the right-wing League dropped a plan to form a government after President Sergio Mattarella vetoed the name of Paolo Savona, an 81-year-old eurosceptic, as economy minister.
Cottarelli's hint comes as Five Star Movement chief Luigi Di Maio urged the League to pick someone else as the economy minister, so that the two parties could proceed with forming a coalition government.
"Let's find someone of the same caliber as Savona, who would still remain in the government in another ministry," Di Maio said on Facebook after meeting with Mattarella, as reported by Reuters separately. "If the League agrees ... we can still form a government."
