Starbucks to pilot technology that tracks coffee beans

Starbucks Corp. said March 21 that it will be piloting a new technology that is able to trace coffee beans from "bean to cup" in a bid to bring a positive impact to its smallholder farmers.

The Seattle-based coffee giant said the initiative will start in Costa Rica, Colombia and Rwanda, where it will log and share real-time information regarding the traceability of coffee beans.

Starbucks also seeks to connect directly with its farmers and to build on its 99% ethically sourced coffee commitment using the technology.

The company said it has so far invested more than $100 million to support coffee communities and improve farmer livelihoods, among other initiatives.
