Report: Mine surveyor dies in Ky. coal mine accident

A surveyor died in an accident inside a Tennco Energy Inc. coal mine in Bell County, Ky., WYMT-TV of eastern Kentucky reported Jan. 14.

The accident occurred at the Toms Fork coal mine. Jeffrey Norman Slone, a 30-year mining veteran, was hit by a shuttle car 600 feet inside the mine, the report said.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the accident, and operations at the mine have been shut down until the investigation is completed.

The incident marks the second coal industry fatality of 2019.
