BMW to recall 11,700 cars with wrong engine software

German carmaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG will recall 11,700 cars that were installed with the wrong engine software, Reuters reported Feb. 23, citing a company statement.

BMW reportedly said it will fix the engine management software installed on luxury 5- and 7-series models made between 2012 and 2017.

The company's statement came after German news magazine Der Spiegel reported that it installed software that "manipulated" emissions of harmful gases, Reuters said.

In 2015, fellow German carmaker Volkswagen AG also became embroiled in an emissions scandal which, according to Reuters, cost the company $31.7 billion in settlements.
