Dominion taps Siemens Gamesa as preferred supplier for Va. offshore wind project

Dominion Energy Inc. selected Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA as the preferred turbine supplier for an offshore wind project 27 miles off the coast of Virginia.

Once complete, the project is expected to generate over 2,600 MW of renewable capacity.

Under the agreement, the parties will submit a construction and operations plan to the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in late 2020. Ocean survey work is scheduled to start this year, which will be included in the construction and operations plan.

Siemens Gamesa and Dominion also agreed to evaluate offshore wind supply chain development opportunities in Virginia with the goal to lower project costs.

In June 2019, Dominion started work on a pilot offshore wind project as the first step in building the utility-scale offshore wind development. Siemens Gamesa will install two 6-MW wind turbines in the spring that are expected to be connected to the grid in late 2020.
