Northern Dynasty to start permitting process at Pebble

Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. said Dec. 21 that federal and state permitting for its Pebble copper property in Alaska will kick off Dec. 22, with the company's Pebble Limited Partnership subsidiary scheduled to file for a U.S. Clean Water Act 404 permit.

In mid-May, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agreed to withdraw a proposed determination under the Clean Water Act, paving the way for the Clean Water Act 404 permit application.

"The project design we're taking into permitting includes a substantially reduced development footprint and meaningful new environmental safeguards that respond directly to the priorities and concerns we've heard from stakeholders in Alaska," said Tom Collier, CEO of the Pebble Partnership unit.

Northern Dynasty also reported that it received the initial US$37.5 million option payment from First Quantum Minerals Ltd. related to the recent framework agreement contemplating a US$1.5 billion deal under which First Quantum would be entitled to earn a 50% interest in the Pebble Partnership subsidiary.
